The closing of our famous “bridge Autogrill” marks the end of an era, but our plans for Valdichiana continue.
The closing down of the famous old Montepulciano Autogrill was completed a few days ago. Designed by Angelo Bianchetti and opened in 1967, it became an icon on account of its unique architecture, which earned it the nickname of “space ship”: 68 metres long, 45 of which spanning the motorway, and with a gigantic asymmetrical load-bearing beam.
Emblem of the economic boom
It was an important part of our history and that of everyone who worked in it or for whom it was a point of reference, like the countless young people who used to come here in the ‘60s to finish off the evening in company. A bit of America in the middle of Valdichiana.
Looking to the future
Even though we’ve said goodbye to the old building, we will continue to offer travellers a stop-off full of flavour and relaxation, right here where we’ve been working for over 50 years. In spring 2022, we will be opening two Autogrills at the sides of the motorway, these too being avant-garde in terms of both f&b offering and architecture, in line with anti-seismic standards and with new energy efficiency systems.
The history of Autogrill is part of the history of the Italians. Delve back into it with us.
